Diddy had recently said that “DJs killed Hip Hop”. Here is his response to “the DJ”. Passion for music is real! Here’s my take:
Let me say this… DJs didn’t kill hip hop. Especially in Toronto.. As a DJ, if u are not playing new music and breaking records YOU ARE WACK! What ruined the life of a record is people relying on the mass media to dictate whether a record is a hit (i.e. BET, MTV, Much Music, etc.). Nowadays, DJs are searching for that next hit to say they broke it or played it first! Maybe some DJs don’t take the risk in breaking a new record – but don’t categorize us all the same way. I had the convo with many DJs – the “digital” game (Serato) can do 1 of two things… It makes a DJ even more creative & passionate or it makes them super lazy! Everyday is like Christmas to me… sometimes u get that record that blows you away. That would be like the “super gift”… that toy u wanted when u were a kid. Some tracks are like getting socks & underwear – just ordinary. Nothing exciting!
Basically… Don’t blame all DJs! Those DJs who aren’t willing to expand know who they are!
